Editor’s Note: The Golden Rule is an ethical principle espoused by most religions and humane value systems of the world. Mr. Penney learned it in its Christian expression that goes back to Jesus of Nazareth. It reads: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
The Rule has played an important role in JCPenney history because it formed the name of Mr. Penney’s first store: The Golden Rule Store. The name was a highly effective advertising ploy because it accurately described the quality of experience customers could expect when they shopped Mr. Penney’s stores.
