Mr. Penney learned it in its Christian expression that goes back to Jesus of Nazareth. It reads: 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.'
The Rule has played an important role in JCPenney history because it formed the name of Mr. Penney’s first store: The Golden Rule Store. The name was a highly effective advertising ploy because it accurately described the quality of experience customers could expect when they shopped Mr. Penney’s stores.

Whatwill you accomplish this winter? What magnificent goalswill you achieve? Decide to make this your most productiveyear ever, then get to work. Make it happen. 'Git 'er done!'
============================================2.  Welcome Notes

Second, a flock of holidays are coming up! I know, it's fartoo early for the decorations in the stores, but I did hearsome kids looking forward to Halloween the other day. Mypoint is not to rush the holidays but to remind us to planahead so we can enjoy them.
Whatever holidays you observe, spend a few minutes decidingwhat would make them extra special this year. If you needairline tickets, buy them now. If you need to invitesomeone or schedule some time off work, or set aside someextra cash, make the arrangements so this holiday will beexactly the way you want it. And, no stress!
Finally, a couple hundred people signed up for my BESTBOOKS newsletter last week, and I love that! About once amonth, I send reviews of the books I've read recently.There's no cost and if love books (and ideas!) sign up at:' 'http://philiphumbert.com/BestBooks.htm' target=_blank>http://philiphumbert.com/BestBooks.htm '>Books
============================================3: The Winter Of Your Success
This week, I told my MasterMind group that 'for somereason' I've been unusually energized, focused andproductive. Afterward, I realized there's no mystery. Iknow exactly why I'm so excited: Winter is coming!
Obviously, every season has its strong points, but for mefall and winter have always been connected with'production.' I think of winter days spent reading, writing,on the phone with colleagues, and getting stuff done.The crisp, cool mornings energize me, and I love that!
(For our subscribers 'down south,' I know your summer iscoming, and you'll be enjoying all things we'll be missinghere in the frozen north! Have a great, and productive,summer!)
But for the majority of TIPS subscribers, it's autumn andthis is the BEST time to achieve your most important short-term goals.
Since you won't be tempted by the beach, how will you usethe time? Since you won't be playing much golf or tennis,what projects will you get done this winter?
The possibilities, of course, are unlimited. Some TIPSsubscribers will write that novel they've been meaning tostart. Some investors will be out looking at real estatewhile interest rates are low and the competition refuses tofight the snow and cold. Some people will go to the gym,while others will be making sales and earning fantasticyear-end commissions. How will YOU use the days of winter?
Here's a key point: You aren't likely to hit anything inparticular unless you DECIDE in advance and make theCOMMITMENT to 'git 'er done.'
I admit that compared to many coaches, I am slightlysuspicious of most 'goals.' I put 'goals' in quotes becausefar too many of the 'goals' I hear about are merely nice-sounding hot air. Too many 'goals' are just writtendescriptions of things we wish or hope or fantasize about,and they become set-ups for frustration.
The reality is that human beings are magnificent goal-achieving creatures, BUT only when we aim at targets weREALLY want to hit. Writing down some nice-sounding phrasebecause your doctor wants you to lose weight, or becauseyour boss wants you to do more is usually a waste of time.
First, ponder what you really want to achieve this winter.What would be fun? What would give you an incredible senseof satisfaction, fulfillment or delight? Is there a 90-dayproject that would transform your life forever? Write THATdown and mull it over. THAT'S worth going for!
Second, make it measurable and specific. Put some numberson it. Lose ten pounds, not just 'some weight.' Increasesales by 18% over last year, or read (and finish) 'War andPeace' by your birthday.
Third, develop a reasonable (believable) strategy. A goalwithout a plan is just a pipe dream, so figure out how youcan 'win' this time. Will you get up earlier? Will you re-write your website? Will you make more calls, or hire acoach? You need a 'recipe' to achieve your goal.
Fourth, tell some people who will cheer you on and hold youaccountable. This can be tricky because too many peoplewill claim to 'support' you while in fact they raisedoubts, criticize or undermine you. So choose carefully,but get some cheerleaders!
Fifth - this is the easy part - get to work. Now thatyou've got a target, a plan and a support team, DO whatyou've promised to do. Make the calls. Run the laps. Putthe money in savings. Read a few pages each day. Whateveryour goal and your strategy for achievement, 'git 'erdone.'
For winners, winter is an amazingly time of year. Whilenature (and most of our competition) is sleeping, winnersuse the winter to stay focused and achieve greatness. Whatwill you accomplish this winter? What magnificent goalswill you achieve? Decide to make this your most productiveyear ever, then get to work. Make it happen. 'Git 'er done!'
============================================4.  Quotes of the Week
'Know what you want to do, hold the thought firmly, and doevery day what should be done, and every sunset will seeyou that much nearer the goal.' -- Elbert Hubbard
'Achievement seems to be connected with action. Successfulmen and women keep moving. They make mistakes, but theydon't quit.' -- Conrad Hilton
'Our limitations and success will be based, most often, onour own expectations for ourselves. What the mind dwellsupon, the body acts upon.' -- Denis Waitley
'Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that'sthe stuff life is made of.' -- Benjamin Franklin
============================================5. Strictly Business: Eliminate the Bottlenecks!
In any process, there is an upper limit to your results,and the limit is always the same: A bottleneck.
In watering your garden, the smallest point in the linelimits how much water passes through the hose. Thebottleneck may be the valve on the house, the diameter ofthe hose, the little washer inside the coupling, or thenozzle on the end. Wherever the bottleneck occurs, itlimits the flow through the entire hose, and the solutionis always the same: increase the flow at that one criticalpoint, and the results are instant and dramatic!
The same thing is true in business and in your career.
No matter how smart or skilled or passionate you are, thereis always one critical point that limits you more than allthe others combined! Fix it, and like the flow of waterthrough your hose, the results are amazing!
Here are 3 common bottlenecks:
1. Not Acting as a Business. Many professionals andentrepreneurs have a dream, not a business. They workwithout focus, and without results. For tax purposes, thegovernment makes a distinction between a hobby (no matterhow hard you work at it), and a business. Customers cantell the difference, too. The bottleneck is lack ofclarity. Work the business!
2. Ineffective Marketing. If you aren't getting enough newcustomers, the bottleneck is in your marketing process.Find a way to let more people know about your business.Everyone wants great service at a fair price! Help themfind you!
3. Inadequate Value Added. To achieve unusual success, youmust transform customers into life-long partners. If peopleare trying your product or service, but don't become repeatcustomers, something is wrong. It may be a skill problem, apricing problem, or a delivery problem, but it must befixed!
What are the bottlenecks that hold you back? Find and fixthem. You can not afford to allow one small 'pinch' tolimit your potential. Eliminate the bottlenecks!
If you are ready for some help, get a coach. An outsideperspective and the knowledge of an expert coach can oftenwork miracles! Put your time and effort where they willyield the best results. To get started, just send me anemail. We'll talk and we'll get to work.'mailto:Coach@philiphumbert.com' target=_blank>Coach@philiphumbert.com
============================================6. Resources and Tools for YOUR Success!
#1 Alive, Awake and Aware! My new book and Audio Program 'http://aliveawakeandaware.com/' target=_blank>http://AliveAwakeAndAware.com
This is the book and audio program I've wanted to createfor the past several years. Every one can recall a timewhen a new piece of information or advice has createdinstant change in our lives. But what about all the thingsthat never seem to change, no matter how hard we try?
After 25 years of studying highly successful people, Iwrote this book because effective, instant change comes inthree steps. The inner circle is self-awareness or self-knowledge. When we are clear about who we are and what weREALLY want, change is easier. The second circle iseffective support from our intimate community, the peoplewe spend time with every day. Finally, change must makesense 'out there' in the real world where we work and play.
After 25 years, I've written what I believe is the 'recipe'for a great life. I've tried to take the key ideas, themost fruitful 'seeds' from thousands of books andinterviews with hundreds of successful people and put themin one place so YOU can learn, benefit and APPLY theinformation immediately.
And, it's available in both book form and in a series ofaudio CD's.Get it at: ' 'http://aliveawakeandaware.com/' target=_blank>http://AliveAwakeAndAware.com '>AAA
#2 Bodacious Woman! An Incredible Book For All Women (And Men) Special 25% Discount for TIPS Subscribers 'http://philiphumbert.com/go/mf.htm' target=_blank>http://philiphumbert.com/go/mf.htm
This is a wonderful, fun, inspiring little book that is a'must read' for both women and men. I thought so highly ofit that I bought and mailed copies to four of my clients assoon as I could get my hands on them, then I mailed copiesto all eight of my nieces. You've got to read this!
But, why? The answer is simple: You can't get along in thisworld by being 'nice' (read: 'timid'), or by refusing to gofor what you want in life. Foley's honesty is vibrant andrefreshing. Her examples ring so true and so familiar thatyou can't help seeing yourself (and women you love) onevery page. There is power in this little book!
Success is always an 'inside job.' It starts with tellingour truth, being clear about who we are and what we want inlife. To the women who read this review, I say, 'Just buyit!' To the men who read this, I say, 'Just buy it, read it(under the covers with a flashlight if you have to), thengive it to the woman in your life.' It's that good.
You can get it at Amazon.com, but here's a MUCH BETTERdeal: I contacted Mary's publicist, Barbara Keddy, and gota heck of a deal for you. Use this link and you'll get 25%off the price of the book, you'll get Mary's newsletter(cancel any time if you don't like it) and you'll get aninvitation to her 'Bodacious Women's Club' (at a $5 trialprice - can't beat that with a stick!). Check it out, buythe book, and enjoy:' 'http://philiphumbert.com/go/mf.htm' target=_blank>http://philiphumbert.com/go/mf.htm '>GoBo
#3 Achieve Your Goals, Transform Your Life! The 'Sedona Method' 'http://philiphumbert.com/go/Sedona.htm' target=_blank>http://philiphumbert.com/go/Sedona.htm
People ask me how they can 'really explode my success and change my life', and after telling them there is no magic bullet, I refer them to The Sedona Method(tm). This series of tapes and workbooks is, without doubt, the MOSTsuccessful, thorough and powerful program for taking charge of your life that I have ever seen. I wish I had written it! You can get a FREE initial tape to sample the program, and for goodness sake, sign up for their free newsletter!Their simple observation that, 'Happiness is free' opened my eyes and was the beginning of a remarkable journey.Very powerful stuff!
The program is not simple or cheap - you expected a quick pill? It is comprehensive, orderly, and effective. Both Mary and I have used it, and it works! Highly recommended!' 'http://philiphumbert.com/go/Sedona.htm' target=_blank>http://philiphumbert.com/go/Sedona.htm '>Sedona
#4     Got a Website?         Earn Passive Income!         'http://philiphumbert.com/go/1A.htm' target=_blank>http://philiphumbert.com/go/1A.htm
Over the years, I've paid lots of money for shopping carts,autoresponders and systems that were supposed to help meserve my subscribers and make money from my website. Noneof them worked, or more accurately they worked, but theywere complex, confusing and didn't work very well. Then Idiscovered Don Schnure and the amazing programs he's puttogether. They work! They are powerful, EASY to use, andthey let me automate my newsletter, my affiliate programsand my shopping cart, with no hassle! I love this! And, youcan use it for 30 days to check it out. Highly recommended!' 'http://philiphumbert.com/go/1A.htm' target=_blank>http://philiphumbert.com/go/1A.htm '>The Tour!

============================================1.   The One-Minute TIP
We all know that 'over-night success' often takes 20 yearsor longer. I encourage you to move forward as quickly asyou can, but also to accept that whatever is happening isapparently the way it should be, at least for the moment.If you can safely and legitimately speed up the process, gofor it! Learn new skills, get a coach, form a team, 'makeit happen.' But. 'Patience is a virtue' and few of us havemastered it. Sometimes 'over-night success' takes time andlife can teach us important lessons along the way.
============================================2.  Welcome Notes
This week I published an issue of my book review newsletter(BEST BOOKS) in html format, with colors and graphics andmy smiling picture at the top. It took more effort than Ianticipated, but it was fun and the results were fantastic!People seemed to love it, although one woman did point outthat plain text (like this newsletter) requires fewerinternet resources.
As a result, I suspect we'll be up-grading TIPS to htmlaround the end of the year or early in 2006. It should beeasier to read and more fun. If you have strong opinionsone way or the other please let me know, but that does seemto be the future of most newsletters. And, if you'recurious, you can see this week's BEST BOOKS at:<A target='_blank' href='http://philiphumbert.com/BB/current.htm'>http://philiphumbert.com/BB/current.htm
Finally, I've been delighted by the emails and commentsfrom both women and men about Mary Foley's wonderful littlebook, 'Bodacious Woman!' I've been particularly thrilled bythe notes from men who bought it -- or had a copy given tothem, usually by a woman in their life -- and found ithelpful and inspring! This is a great little book! Let'sall have a 'bodacious' week! (Isn't that a great word!?)If you're curious to know more, check it out at:<A target='_blank' href=' <A target='_blank' href=' http: mf.htm? go philiphumbert.com>http://philiphumbert.com/go/mf.htm '>GoBo
============================================3: The Joy of Slow Change
Most people want success NOW! Or at least they want toachieve their goals and enjoy the fruits of victory as soonas possible. Wiser heads, however, understand thatsometimes change takes time.
We live in an 'instant' culture. Life moves quickly andeveryone wants instant relief and immediate gratification.We want to get ahead, make money, make the sale, lose theweight, or take next year's vacation as soon as possible. Isometimes think we move so fast that eventually we may evenget ahead of ourselves!
This week I talked with a potential client who fears lifehas passed him by. He would like to open a business, makesome 'major money and retire while I can still enjoy it.'He sees younger people passing him by and he wants a coachbecause he 'can't wait another year or two.' He wantsfinancial success and he wants it 'now.' The man is 26years old.
That call left me sad and even a bit confused. At more thantwice his age, I wondered if there was any future for me atall! <G>
Now, before we go too far down this path, let me affirmthat rapid success is a good thing. In fact, I'm all forit! If you have a chance to make major advances, I suggestyou do so! Seize opportunity whenever you can! When thereare legal, ethical and legitimate ways to take giant stepsforward, you should go for it. Like 'Duh!'
But in her wisdom, I think Mother Nature has something tosay about the more ordinary path to success. Healthy,organic change usually happens slowly.
When plants or animals are taken out of their traditionalenvironment, most of the time they don't do well. Rapidchanges in climate, diet, or other environmental factorsare usually harmful. Our veterinarian even recommends thatwe be careful about changing Cody's diet from one brand ofdog food to another so as not to upset his system. (Thisfor a dog that eats anything!)
Even kids who have dreamed of college can suffer homesickness. People who have saved for years and eagerlyanticipated a visit to another culture can still bedisoriented by language or customs they didn't expect. Weknow that people who 'win the lottery' often experience amyriad of problems adjusting to their new situation.
Rapid success is not always a good thing.
That's no reason to slow down! It is, however, a reason topersist, to be wise, and to 'keep on keeping on' if yoursuccess is arriving slower than you would like.
It's a complicated thing. On the one hand, we want to bequick and efficient. I love being a coach precisely becauseit DOES bring success more quickly and more easily. At thesame time, too often we become impatient and easilydiscouraged. Sometimes, I suspect nature and life areteaching us vital lessons while we impatiently climbing theladder of success.
Persist. Work hard. Be patient. Never, never give up! Lookfor a better, faster way, but in the meantime, trust thatlife is unfolding as it should and that in time, you willget there. 'Inch by inch, anything's a cinch.'
============================================4.  Quotes of the Week
'Be faithful in small things because it is in them thatyour strength lies.' -- Mother Teresa
'Every day that you attempt to see things as they are intruth Is a supremely successful day.' -- Vernon Howard
'One of the many things nobody ever tells you about middleage is that it's such a nice change from being young.' -- Dorothy Canfield Fisher
'We have much to do together. Let us do it in wisdom andlove and joy. Let us make this the human experience.' -- Gary Zukav
============================================5. Strictly Business: Marketing Success vs. Sales Success
Many people have pointed out the distinction betweenmarketing (making people aware of you and your business)and sales (closing the deal). It's always critical to knowwhich is which, and to use skills appropriate for thesituation.
Recently, I've become aware of lots of business peopletrying to use far too many different marketing strategiesand impatiently wondering why they weren't creating instantresults. I recently consulted with one local business thathas tried 9 different marketing strategies in the pastyear, 'but none of them worked.' No wonder they and theirpotential customers are confused!
My coaching was that all of the strategies seemed viable,and any of them might work well IF they were usedconsistently over time. The owner's problem is that (1) hedoesn't want to choose because he fears he'll choose thewrong one, and (2) he's eager for his marketing to producerapid sales, which is a mistake.
Marketing is primarily intended to create brand recognitionand give you the opportunity to make sales in the future.Sales is the art of helping a qualified prospect (who isalready interested) to buy right now. They are differentprocesses and they require different skills.
Be clear about your marketing strategy. Pick one or twostrategies that are natural and comfortable for you. Pick astrategy that comes naturally for you, and that you enjoy.Use it over time - months, years, even decades! - to giveyourself the opportunity to make sales down the road.
Then, know and use appropriate SALES techniques when thetime comes. When a qualified prospect inquires about yourgoods or services, know how to close the deal, but don'texpect that every MARKETING conversation will lead toimmediate sales. Knowing the difference is a key to long-term financial success.

Over the years, I've paid lots of money for shopping carts,autoresponders and systems that were supposed to help meserve my subscribers and make money from my website. They are powerful, EASY to use, andthey let me automate my newsletter, my affiliate programsand my shopping cart, with no hassle! I love this! And, youcan use it for 30 days to check it out. ============================================7. Humor: Lessons From Noah's Ark
I think I've published this (or something similar) before,but when my friend and long-time subscriber, Bob Armstrong,sent it this week it struck my funny bone, gave me a nicechuckle, and made me think. That's a great combination! Ihope you enjoy it, and also get something to think aboutfrom it..
'Everything I need to know in life, I learned from Noah'sArk.'
1. Don't miss the boat.2. Remember that we are all in the same boat.3. Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.4. Stay fit. Even when you're 600 years old you may get a chance to do something really big.5. Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.6. Build your future on high ground.7. For safety's sake, travel in pairs.8. Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.9. When you're stressed, float a while.10. Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.11. No matter how big the storm, there's always a rainbow afterward.
